This is a short and brief critique on “The Prestige”. I love this film so much, and at some point, I will return to it and expand on my thoughts on it.
I love the idea of turning an epistolary novel into a film adaptation and reflecting the diary entries through the use of character narration. Also, by using the non linear retrospective narrative structure, the film is able to create the psychological challenge to the mind and take it to that next level. The films cinematography was perfectly done to a point that didn’t overshadow or cover up the films initial themes and exploitations. The film was successful in not having to rely on its cinematography and music score to build up the tension and reflect the emotions in a particular scene. This was great in allowing the audience to create their own emotional responses without being almost forced into conforming and agreeing with the emotional response that filmmakers try and give off through filmmaking elements.
